@argonautstudiosny: Hasan Hadi’s gorgeous debut film confronts you in the hardest way with the saddening reality of Iraq in the 1990s- a cruel and important topic to face. 9-year old Lamia lives in the Iraqi marshes with her grandmother Bibi. The poverty in Iraq is crushing, the quality of life has drastically sagged due to international sanctions and the political state. All the while, Saddam Hussein leads the country in terror and greed. At the annual drawing before Hussein’s birthday, Lamia is selected and tasked to bake the birthday cake- for every school has to make one to honour and celebrate the president. The film shows Lania’s and her Bibi’s journey into the city on the quest to get the scarce ingredients. They are difficult to find and the money is not nearly enough, but Lania needs to bake the cake- or else she will be dragged across the floor. It is a soul-wrenching picture with absolutely stellar performances by the lead cast and incredible cinematic work. A tragic depiction into the snippet of Lamia’s life, one that has sadly been lived by too many. #iraqifilm #cannes2025 #filmtok #fyp
