What I find interesting is they like to say the USA thinks we’re then center of the world. But I so often I hear a European say “this is how we do it here I’m shocked that the USA and other places do it different and it’s therefore wrong” which to me implys they think they’re the center of the world lol

As an american, all of these US/EU differences aren’t a big deal. There’s no law forcing me to use either one. I can (and do) measure things in cm, print on A4 paper, use celsius, etc if it’s appropriate for the task.

It's not like A4 is an objectively better size. It's a weird thing for people to treat like this.

pretty sure the iso paper sizes are pretty recently developed... like in the 20th century. why should we abandon the thing we've been using longer?

letter size isnt even a universal size in the us, when I was learning CAD and Drafting we used A sizes, because of that scaling

I'm in America and use a4 and a5 size notebooks. never even seen a notebook sold as letter sized. I do see legal though obviously

The only reason they’re different is that we industrialized separately from Europe when we did so. And now we have an entire infrastructure set up for handling the paper sizes that we have. Our Postal Service, our copy machines, our printers, our envelopes, our folders, our filing cabinets, tons of things that touch paper every single day. Many of those things can accept paper in both formats, but some things cannot. And we have absolutely no advantage in changing to another paper size standard. And I cannot imagine carrying this deeply about what size paper another country uses.

Honestly, the scaling thing is *the* reason to switch to the A# system. Design one poster, turn it into a flyer and a postcard seamlessly? Ummm, yes please!

If everyone did the same things, looked the same, cooked and ate the same foods, dressed the same etc. what a bland and boring, homogenous world this would be.

I don’t even have a name for paper sizes. I just called the standard size of paper (like what you would put in a printer) either printer paper or copier paper

The only benefit I can see is in international exchange. Like when I applied to uni in Japan, I had to mail documents to the university and it was a pain to have to figure out how to print in A4 for their requirements while being in the US at the time. Converting just standardizes things more easily when you're doing such kind of international exchanges of documents. But admittedly I don't necessarily think that's a problem to most average, everyday person. Honestly of all things, I feel like it's kind of a nonissue.

the problem is that America standardized first and went with what was being commonly used at the time.

Let’s just take advertisements as an example. If you design a A0 Poster, you have no problem scaling it up to A-1 or A-2. A similar phenomenon can be witnessed in print media or packaging. A cardboard box that fits two A4 sheets, fits one A3 sheet or four A5 sheets

i think its more that if you look at different issues the US is more than likely gonna be a part of the minority of countries. this is just one example.

imho, the primary advantage to switching is making international business easier. relatively minor issue, but still does exist. worth the effort? meh.
