@curtisagardner: Keep doing what you’re doing sir. Your interest in being better and being self critical, are exactly the type of things you need to be focused on. Learn from your mistakes, beat yourself up alittle, build a process to prevent the same mistake and move onto the next repair. Don’t listen to all these “don’t do it” or “leave the industry” clowns in the comments. It’s hard, and it’s challenging but it’s an extremely rewarding career. I do recommend having a plan on your exit in about 20 years though. #mechaniclife #mechanic #automotive #autorepair #shoplife

Kids being forced to go flat rate in their early 20’s severely inhibits growth and competency. Before I worked under someone I was flat rate at a Chevy dealer while also going to college classes (not for cars) and didn’t really know what I was doing. Learn how to do the work first and worry about how the car, system, or part works later on. Significant raises also don’t come from training/certifications. Certifications help substantiate your worth but true raises of $5, $7, $10, or $15 come from leveraging what the dealer or shop is desperate for. Anyone who stays put and relies on tenure for compensation will usually never get what they want.

My advice is that if he’s that young he needs to work under someone who is really good for a few years. My mentor was a beast and it’s the reason I’m as good as I am today (I still learn everyday). We still talk regularly. I went from $14 hourly at 24 years old as a helper to $70s flat rate at 29. He gave me the intro course to transmissions and I ran with it.
