In other words, if we all got the same high amount of investment, we would all be at that high level of prosperity.

Which is why they will never allow the same level of investment that could narrow the gap by increasing the “perfect practice”. Example is them discontinuing AP courses in some inner city schools.

Also rich folks have networks that make it a whole lot easier to find jobs after graduation . As these ivy schools have become more like hedge funds offering classes.

The strategy of the current U.S. administration is to reduce investment in lower socioeconomic classes. This policy will perpetuate the cycle of poverty for the bottom 20%.

Well said and understood. That has always been the reason why USA purposely under funds education. To keep the rich rich and the poor without opportunities

This isn’t a commentary on Oxford or Yale- it’s a commentary on the education system that produces its applicants. Hes accurately laying out the argument that everyone in that room isn’t there by chance- they’re there by design. Nobody in that room can or will hear him. But everyone excluded from that room must.

It’s seen at all levels of education. I went to a state medical school in the south and the majority of my classmates were multi-generational legacies. The idea that we live in a meritocracy is just an illusion.

Pierre Bourdieu calls it Cultural Capital- the investment upper middle, and middle class parents put into children enables them to have access to so many things working class and poor children will never have. Going to museums, the types of vacation your families take, did your parents teach you how to talk to people in authority? To question authority? All these things, and many more, create cultural capital. Annette Laureau did a longitudinal study of working class and middle class kids- she followed them from childhood to adulthood- and all these things played a significant role in children’s success and educational attainment.
