Fun fact women (specifically young women) often use filler words because it makes them less likely to be interrupted and called “aggressive” or “hostile” despite it often being used to try to dismiss the intelligence of women in a social setting (for example treating young women saying um or like as if it means they’re uneducated)

my mum used to get me and my siblings play 'the um game' where we would take turns talking about our day and forming sentences and if we said like or um or used any kind of filler word we had to restart, it's been sooo good for us all haha

filler words are unfortunately pretty necessary for women. in my linguistics study, we looked at the fact that women adopted filler words in group settings because men will interrupt if you take a pause. of course its extended beyond that now but taking pauses is a luxury for women - particularly in college or work settings.
