There are many ways to get around that in the USA, by trusts, gifts while still alive is a big one as well.

U.S. tax system is rigged by Republicans for the rich. The tax exemption was $675k in 2001 and George W. Bush got it increased to $3.5 million by 2009. Trump 1 increased it to $11.2 million in 2018 and the Big Ugly Bill increased it to about $15m per person starting in 2026 and it increases every year after that! The rest of us have to pick up the slack while the one-percenters pass on their mega estates tax free! 😱

The real crime is that the people leaving the value of the estate already paid taxes all along the way of their life.

Use an irrevocable trust: By moving assets into an irrevocable trust, you legally transfer ownership of the assets to the trust. Because the assets are no longer part of your estate, they are not subject to estate or inheritance taxes when you pass away.

That is the cost of national health care and generous social programs. Many don’t realize that “free” everything often means burdening the middle class not just the “rich”

In the U.K. 325k is the standard nil rate tax rate. Then in addition to this if you leave it to your direct descendant’s (kids, grandkids…) your estate can also qualify for residence nil rate tax rate for a further 175k tax free, so 500k tax free total for a single parent. In the event you’re married and hand it to the partner then kids you’d receive up to 1M tax free. Any tax due you also have 6 months (not 30 days) to pay from death, then can agree a 10 year payment plan if required which ofcourse has interest because it’s effectively a loan. In my opinion it’s necessary to have this to stop wealth hoarding and generational wealth which seems more apparent in the US. Let’s also remember 500k in GBP is ~670k USD which would be a sizeable house to hand down to your family tax free. From my experience living in both the U.K. and US, they both have their pros and cons (healthcare, social security, welfare and retirement). But please share real facts and don’t push a false narrative.

Why can’t your parents just add you to the house as co-owners and when they pass you already are owner. Or why don’t they already “sell” it to you when they’re older and continue to live in til they pass

It’s absurd. The tax on that home, estate, income was already paid for by your parents. The government hitting it again is double dipping. The value limit in the US may be a bit on the high side may not be, it’s not unreasonable for a middle class family to have put away enough money and invest wisely enough to be in that range. Though highly unlikely. Ginormous estates is a different story of course but 500k pounds is waaaaayyy too low. That number needs to be seriously adjusted and the tax rate needs to lowered, 40% is obscene.

I think the UK law is way too strict. But I also think our US rule is way not strict enough. Parents may have worked hard for their money, but their lazy kids didn't.

This is incorrect- we have similar inheritance tax as well currently. In fact the Biden Harris campaign wanted to raise it to 70% if you have over 3 million in unrealized assets- meaning family business or farms value (not money in the bank) so upon your parents death yoh would have to sell the house/land before tax season. My mom has cancer and I’ve just gone through this with all the professionals. I can not get around that. Normal people who aren’t billionaires can’t.
