commonly in IEC style the O/L contact is just before the contactor, on A1.
in our electrical legislation in my country, we cannot switch neutral in most situations. this means having the O/L on A2 is not allowed

you can have the overload contact anywhere in the circuit, there may be a reason it needs to be in the beginning, maybe a safety to turn something else off

A reversing motor starter has two coils, but one overload. You have to put it after the coils in this case. I think that limitation just became the norm for even non-reversing starters.

Was common practice to break neutral/common side of coil with overload contacts.
All it has to do is open the coil circuit.
