My ex bff would watch our mutual friend bully me and never stand up for me but talk shit about the bully in private. She only said something when a completely random outside person called out the bully’s behavior. I couldn’t believe it.

I had a boss who was a bully. We all talked about it but I brought it up to her one day in a staff meeting. Everybody else stayed quiet. She pulled me aside later and say, “See how they couldn’t stand up? That’s why I manage them like that. Don’t ever put yourself on the line for them again.”
