for those who arent aware, this genre of chinese 1930's high fantasy, and just 1920-1940s era historical dramas in general, is chinese parallel to western films about nahtzee occultism and nahztees in general, respectively. the KMT and Nationalists, specifically the ultra conservative KMT bloc, were the domestic fascists of china trying and failing to take over all of china. its what the warlord era was all about. its why japanese collaborationists govts that took over parts of the mainland were so successful in holding such large swathes of territory

SPOILERS!!!!! When the men entered, the smoke was pollen from a flower that causes hallucinations (gold not real). The monster is the plant. The pollen slowly paralyzes its victims as well and consumes them like a Venus fly trap. The main guy Jack was tricked to go in the tomb to kill it. Almost lost it when he was hallucinating his daughter who died by “enemies” when he was a grave robber. Jack snaps out of it. They burn the plant.

So went down the rabbit hole and checked it out on YouTube. Other than the Engrish subtitles being trash, the movie itself is pretty darn good.
