Was it an oil based kilz with water based paint on top?

Yeah… always someone’s else’s problem, and never because you didn’t know what you were doing.

Used the wrong kind of kilz or wrong kind of paint

Former paint rep here, the only reason I can think of for why this happened is that the primer sat too long before applying the topcoat. Especially if it’s oil primer, it has to be topcoated within 24 hrs. But, contrary to many comments, it IS ok to use latex paint over oil PRIMER.

New here, not sure what you’re painting, but if it’s that IKEA type of particleboard, try something called “bin primer”

If you use the white board that you get on Home Depot you need to sand it before primer.

I don’t know what this is but the best primer is sherwin-Williams extreme bond. I painted an ikea cube shelf for a friend almost 10 years ago and it looks like I painted it yesterday.

It depends on what killz and paint you used. Killz is usually best for covering stains, you sometimes still need a primer after, especially on toothless surfaces like mdf.

I think part of the problem was preparation and the other part was I think the paint and the killz probably chemically didn't work together

I’m just here for the fun :
Zinsser BIN primer! It’s the only thing you can use that will stick. Unfortunately you’re going to have to peel/lightly sand all the old paint off. Lightly sand and thoroughly wipe down and then do primer. Slight sand, wipe and then paint. I like Benjamin Moore Advance or Stixx paint. Source, I’ve painted all my ikea furniture and it worked. So sorry 😬

It looks like the primer is fine and bonded well. Only the paint is peeling.

Scuff sand and then use a shellac primer

Ohhhh I hate that. Benz Bonding Primer is my favorite. I swear I believe you could paint a mirror with it and it'd stick.

did you lightly sand it before hand because nothing will stick to it

That’s gotta be so incredibly frustrating! If it makes you feel better I painted all my kitchen cabinets and hated it so had to repaint them all 😂
