I’ll never understand why other countries hate that Americans are friendly.

Yeah I’ve never put this into words but I smile because I feel the need to convey I’m a friend and not a threat 😭

I think Malaysia or Indonesia is more diverse than america but we don't smile, at least not all the time

ppl thinking american friendliness isnt genuine is so crazy bc it's less effort to not smile and go about your business than it is to smile and get into small talk. and maybe I'm selfish, but it feels good to smile and tell someone they look nice. to smile and talk about the weather, the baseball game last night, whatever. connection is so human.

I love the reasoning behind it. it's a way of showing non verbal communication to each other.

It's really interesting that humans developed showing teeth as a signal of non threat where showing teeth is a symbol of threat or danger in most other primates

We use a lot more facial recognition and vocal inflection than many other countries. You can portray a lot of basic ideas with gestures and facial expressions.

Nice little side effect of smiling to communicate peace and cooperation etc… is genuinely being happier and more cheerful. Accidental “fake it til you make it”- brain feels you smiling, thinks you must be happy, becomes happy lol

In more thinly populated areas, and all of the Americas are, non-verbal communication becomes more important

In Chicago, at least, smiles can substitute for audible greetings. "I'm happy to see you", "I wish you the best", "hope your day goes well". Efficient

I’m learning this the hard way when traveling. Only time I see a smile is when money is involved. Other than that I try not to take it personally when it comes to strangers (I’m so sad “🥀”) but it made me appreciate this continent

Smiling is a manipulation tactic. For example, evolutionary biology research shows that females instinctively smile often to avoid danger and to trick their female rivals through sabotaging them behind their back by using relational aggression while smiling to their face.
