To Americans not getting it: heritage is cultural in the rest of the world. If you have no cultural connection to your roots, you have lost that heritage. The most basic and important thing is being able to speak the language, but also stuff like cooking, contact with relatives and more factor into this. You can't claim to have roots somewhere if they were cut off and ripped out decades ago. hope that helps

When you have a country as young as USA that’s purely made from immigrations (aside from the real Americans (natives), and need identity; it’s not such a bad thing. Anyone who insults Americans for caring doesn’t understand the nature of being an American. (I’m American living in Europe for 12 years. Married to a German. 😬😬)
