No matter how talented or intelligent I was, people always seemed to focus more on the colour of my skin than anything else. • I was told to stay out of the sun, asked if I’d ever consider skin-lightening creams, and hit with backhanded compliments like, “You’d be prettier if you were lighter.” But none of that ever made me want to change how I looked, because I never got that kind of treatment at home. • My mum never made me feel like I had to be anyone other than myself. She was more focused on making sure I was educated, always telling me, “Beauty means nothing if you’re not well-educated.” That stuck with me. • She’s also dark-skinned and honestly one of the most beautiful women I’ve ever seen. I definitely get my looks from her. We are both lawyers (well, I’m almost there) so clearly, beauty and brains run in the family. • That’s why it’s so important to handle conversations about physical appearance sensitively with your daughters and little sisters.
