“Vietnam hates Black people.” Hate? 🤔 I haven’t seen it yet. What I have seen is being invited to a Vietnamese wedding, ending up at karaoke with a family I had just met, and somehow becoming part of the family for the night. Now, they might hate my liver because of how much they kept filling my glass. 😂🍻 But me? Not so much. The truth is, most conversations about race in Vietnam lack context. Vietnam is not the United States. Its history is different. Its demographics are different. Its relationship with foreigners is different. That doesn’t mean every experience will be perfect. It doesn’t mean bias doesn’t exist. But it does mean that understanding Vietnam requires more nuance than a viral headline or a comment section. After living in Vietnam for over 1.5 years, I’ve learned that some of the most meaningful moments happen when you stop trying to fit people into narratives and start seeing them as individuals. This night started with strangers and ended with karaoke, laughter, and memories I’ll never forget. And honestly, that’s been my experience with Vietnam more often than not. That’s also why I created my Vietnam Guide—because context matters. If you’re considering visiting, moving here, or simply want a more honest picture of life in Vietnam, I wanted to create the resource I wish I had when I first arrived. 🇻🇳❤️ Have questions about Vietnam?
