That One Time at Banned Camp :
The most persuasive theory, to my mind, is that industrial alcohol, leaked from a few of the roughly 1700 barrels of it in MC’s cargo hold, ignited. Or, rather, the fumes did. The leaked alcohol would’ve evaporated and fumes filled the hold, to be ignited by a stray spark. The resulting explosion would’ve been alarming, and the crew may well have thought the ship had caught fire (fun fact: byproducts of alcohol combustion are carbon dioxide and water, possibly accounting for the water in the hold when seamen from Dei Gratia boarded). Captain Briggs would then have ordered his family and the rest of the crew into the lifeboat. I still love the out-there explanations, though, up to and including Daleks.

I was obsessed with this story when I read it for the first time in like 2002/3rd grade. It FASCINATED me, and many years later some of ray bradbury's Martian chronicles scratched the same itch

Not terribly far from North Africa so I would guess Barbary pirates. Probably boarded and took the crew but left the cargo after opening it and finding it was alcohol and didn’t want anything to do with it because of religious restrictions.
