A large kitchen in America will typically have a "hood" over the range. It is a fan and duct work that collects the smoke from cooking and routes it outside. No smoke or grease build up inside.

Big fridges and weekly shopping are because we are very car dependent so it makes sense to turn grocery shopping into a big trip and to fill up the trunk because we can’t just walk down the road for groceries every day.
