Red eyes are not “just cosmetic.” Feeling like this can truly affect self esteem and quality of life and I do NOT take that lightly!!!! As for the eyes, it can be a sign your ocular surface is inflamed, irritated, dry, allergic, infected, or reacting to something in your environment/routine. What I told my patient: Your eyes are allowed to be red sometimes. But they shouldn’t be red all the time. And you definitely shouldn’t have to explain your eyes to everyone you meet. A proper dry eye + red eye workup can help us figure out what’s actually causing it instead of just chasing the redness with random drops. Some of my faves: 👁️ preservative-free lubricating drops 🔥 lid hygiene/warm compresses if oil glands are involved 🌿 allergy management if itching is part of it 🚫 avoiding redness-reliever drops unless your eye doctor says otherwise 🩺 an eye exam if it’s persistent, painful, one-sided, light-sensitive, or vision is blurry Redness is a symptom.
