The American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) sets the standards for auditing non-public companies and other entities in the United States. These guidelines are known as Generally Accepted Auditing Standards (GAAS) and are intended to ensure audits are performed consistently, ethically, and with the highest level of professional skepticism.  Key components of AICPA standards for auditors The framework for GAAS is structured around a set of principles that cover the auditor's qualifications, the execution of the fieldwork, and the requirements for reporting.  1. General standards These standards focus on the auditor's competence, mindset, and diligence.  Adequate technical training and proficiency: An auditor must have the necessary education and experience, and must stay current with new accounting principles and auditing procedures. Independence: Auditors must maintain an unbiased and impartial mindset and be free from conflicts of interest to ensure objectivity and credibility. Due professional care: Auditors must perform their work with the diligence and skill that a reasonably prudent and competent auditor would.  2. Standards of fieldwork These standards guide the audit process, emphasizing proper planning, supervision, understanding the client's business and environment, and gathering sufficient, appropriate audit evidence to support findings.  3. Standards of reporting These standards outline how audit findings are communicated, requiring consistency in accounting principles, adequate disclosure of information, and the expression of an opinion on the financial statements.  AICPA vs. PCAOB standards AICPA standards apply to audits of private companies and non-profits, while PCAOB standards govern audits of public companies.  The AICPA Code of Professional Conduct Beyond GAAS, AICPA members must follow a Code of Professional Conduct. This code provides ethical guidance covering principles such as integrity, objectivity, professional competence, due care, confidentiality, and professional behavior.
