@inspiraggio: Ophelia is a character from Hamlet, one of William Shakespeare’s most famous tragedies. She is the daughter of Polonius, a royal advisor, and sister of Laertes. From the beginning, she appears as a gentle, innocent young woman who is in love with Prince Hamlet. Yet her father and brother warn her not to trust him, believing that Hamlet, as royalty, could never truly marry her. Her life takes a tragic turn when Hamlet kills Polonius, mistaking him for the king hiding behind a curtain. That single act shatters her world: she loses her father in the most senseless way, and the killer is the very man she loves. On top of this, Hamlet begins to push her away, treating her with coldness and cruelty as part of his plan for revenge. Caught between love and betrayal, Ophelia has nowhere to turn. From then on, her mind unravels. In the play she wanders aimlessly, singing strange songs filled with hints of death and lost love. Her words are fragmented and unsettling, and those around her realize with pity and fear that she is slipping into madness. Her end is both poetic and devastating. While gathering flowers near a stream, Ophelia falls into the water. At first, her clothes balloon out and keep her afloat, making it seem as though she rests peacefully on the surface. But soon the heavy fabric pulls her down. Shakespeare tells us that in those final moments she continued singing, until the water silenced her voice forever.
