@courtneyhenningnovak: For Japan, I read Kitchen by Banana Yoshimoto, translated from the Japanese by Megan Backus, and this effervescent volume was exactly the book my soul needed. I’ll definitely be reading my works by Yoshimoto, and some (or all?) of the books that you guys recommended. Is this the beginning of a Japanese side quest?
