One of the biggest side effects people warn you about with Taxol is neuropathy: numbness, tingling, or nerve damage in your hands and feet. I’m currently on Taxol number 10 of 12, and so far I’ve had zero neuropathy symptoms. I know it can still happen later, but this is exactly what I’ve been doing to try to prevent it. During my infusion I ice my hands and feet with cold mittens and booties. But the key is that it’s not just putting them on during chemo. There’s a method to it. Here’s what I do: 🩷 I start 15 minutes before the Taxol infusion begins 🩷 I keep them on during the entire infusion 🩷 I continue 15 minutes after the infusion ends Another big thing I’ve learned: they have to be extremely cold. There is a huge difference between mittens that have been sitting in a cooler versus ones that have been in a freezer. When they come straight from the freezer they are painfully cold… but I know they’re actually doing their job. I also switch my mittens and booties every 25 minutes and keep backup pairs in the freezer so they stay constantly freezing cold during the infusion. To help tolerate the cold, I also wear: 🩷 Compression socks and compression gloves (to help reduce blood flow to the nerves) 🩷 Regular socks and mittens over them for insulation Even with all of that my fingers still feel like ice. But if it helps protect my nerves, it’s worth it. Every chemo patient’s body is different, but this is what has helped me so far! If you’re going through Taxol right now, just know you’re not alone in this. ⬇️ I’d love to hear from you: Did you use cold mittens or icing during Taxol? Did it help prevent neuropathy or did you still develop it? Share your experience in the comments so other women going through chemo can learn from it. #breastcancer #breastcancerjourney #breastcancerawarness
