There, through suffering, he found a deeper faith. Freed and eventually ordained by Pope Zephyrinus, Callistus became his close adviser and later succeeded him as pope around 217 AD. As pontiff, he showed radical compassion: welcoming repentant sinners back into communion, supporting marriages between social classes, and challenging rigid moralists. His mercy made him both loved and controversial, yet his example shaped the Church’s understanding of forgiveness.
