I think part of the reason they worked so well together is because they were both outcasts in their own ways. The grinch is obvious, but Martha too. She's constantly the subject of envy to the point she cannot make friends despite trying to. (ie that house decorating scene where Martha is trying to be nice and connect, but doesn't realize people are just being fake to her face.) Martha manages to blend into who society but never really feels she belongs inside it
