It took me 15 years to read Master and Margarita 😂 But also, not picking "The Inspector" for Gogoly is a tragedy. It's probably my favorite political satire.

I think the world is certainly familiar with all these writers and poets. Here in Yugoslavia, they were even part of required reading in schools.

I would say Gogol was totally ukranian and Ukraine should claim his heritage and legacy, though he affected russian literature so much he became one of the most important parts of it. So he is often listed among other russian authors in a sense that all Russia read his books and stories. At least that’s how I was taught in school (I’m Russian Estonian). Of course we shouldn’t forget about imperialism
