Last night, sitting beside my little boy in hospital as he drifted in and out of sleep was both a troubling and thought-provoking experience. As a father, moments like that remind you what your role really is. It’s not to fix everything, because sometimes you simply can’t. My job was to hold his hand, reassure him, talk to him, and just be there. The rest I had to place in the hands of the incredible healthcare professionals caring for him. Thankfully, the wonderful staff at Grange University Hospital in Cwmbran did exactly that, and I cannot thank them enough. Their care, professionalism and kindness made an incredibly stressful situation much easier to bear. One unexpected blessing was the uninterrupted time I had with my five-year-old son. In family life, it’s surprisingly rare to get that much quiet, one-to-one time together. We talked about what makes him happy, what makes him sad, what he dreams about, what he hopes for, and all the little things that matter in the world of a child. It helped take his mind off the pain, and it gave me a glimpse into his heart that I don’t often get in the busyness of everyday life. Thankfully, despite some frightening symptoms, he’s now recovering well and is back home. It looks as though he’s going to make a full recovery. Life has a strange way of teaching us its most important lessons through its hardest moments. Sometimes the experiences we would never choose are the very ones that bring us closer to the people we love. #Fatherhood #Parenting #Fatherhood #DadLife #HospitalLife
