Common codes: P0440, P0442, P0455, P0457 First step: Tighten the gas cap until it clicks. 2. Spark Plug Problem Worn or damaged spark plugs can cause engine misfires. Symptoms: * Rough idle * Engine shaking * Poor acceleration * Poor fuel economy Common codes: P0300–P0308 3. Ignition Coil Problem A bad ignition coil can cause the spark plug not to fire correctly. Symptoms: * Misfire * Rough running * Loss of power * Check Engine Light ⚠️ If the Check Engine Light is flashing, stop driving if possible because a severe misfire can damage the catalytic converter. 4. Oxygen (O2) Sensor Problem The O2 sensor measures oxygen in the exhaust and helps the computer control the air/fuel mixture. Symptoms: * Poor fuel economy * Higher emissions * Sometimes poor engine performance 5. MAF Sensor Problem The Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor measures how much air enters the engine. Symptoms: * Poor acceleration * Rough idle * Stalling * Poor fuel economy A dirty MAF sensor can sometimes cause the problem, so don’t automatically replace it. 6. Catalytic Converter Problem The catalytic converter reduces harmful exhaust emissions. Symptoms: * Loss of engine power * Poor fuel economy * Check Engine Light Common code: P0420 ⚠️ Don’t automatically replace the catalytic converter just because you get P0420. You need to diagnose the cause first. 7. Battery or Charging System Problem A weak battery, bad alternator, poor ground, or charging-system problem can cause electrical problems and sometimes trigger warning lights or trouble codes. Check: * Battery voltage * Alternator output * Battery terminals * Grounds * Charging system 8. EGR Valve Problem The EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) valve helps reduce emissions by sending some exhaust gas back into the engine. Use this process: SCAN → READ CODE → CHECK FREEZE FRAME → VISUAL INSPECTION → TEST → REPAIR → CLEAR CODE → ROAD TEST For example, P0301 does not automatically mean “replace cylinder #1 spark plug.” You need to determine whether the misfire is caused by the spark plug, coil, injector, compression, wiring, or another problem.
