I think its personal preference. I use blankets. mainly because I have a crushed septum (dirtbike) and toss a turn a lot. also my feet sweat even in 20 degree weather and sleep with my feet out.

Best thing about a sleeping bag is that it is versatile. They unzip, so on a warmish night you have a blanket and on a cold night you got a bag

I use a swag. I have a thermal sleep mat, sleeping bag that I sleep on top of and a top sheet w/ a wool army blanket. I sleep on prairies, in swamps and along rivers/ and springs. the weather changes quickly, w/ torrential downpours a daily obstacle. my swag, which I pack all together, gives me the flexibility that I need. I no longer sleep in snow.

I sleep in a over sized sleeping bag with a blanket on top if I get hot I get right under the blanket and cold slide into the sleeping bag
