As a Pediatric PA AND a mom, I know how quickly a sick kid can turn into a 2 AM Google spiral. So here are a few things I wish every parent knew before the next fever, cough, stomach bug, or “something just isn’t right” moment. You don’t need to panic over every symptom. You also don’t need to convince yourself everything is fine when your gut says otherwise. Pay attention to the whole picture: how your child is acting, breathing, drinking, peeing, and responding—not just one number on the thermometer. 🚩 A few red flags I don’t want parents to ignore: • Breathing: ribs pulling in, nostrils flaring, grunting, or struggling to catch their breath • Hydration: no urine for ~8 hours, very dry mouth, or unable to keep fluids down • Mental status: extremely difficult to wake, confused, or unusually unresponsive • Color: blue/gray lips or face • Seizure: a first-time seizure or prolonged seizure • Baby under 3 months with a rectal temperature of 100.4°F (38°C) or higher — needs prompt medical evaluation And please remember: calling your pediatrician with a question does NOT make you an anxious parent. Sometimes you just need reassurance. Sometimes you need a plan. And sometimes your child needs to be seen. Save this for the next sick day and send it to another parent who needs the reminder. For general education only. Please consult with your pediatrician. If your child is having severe symptoms or you’re concerned about an emergency, seek urgent medical care. #pediatricpa #physicianassistant #pediatrics #kidshealth
