@_echoes_of_history_: Summary- During the opening of the Tokyo W*r Crimes Trials on May 3, 1946, Japanese ultranationalist Shūmei Ōkawa suddenly stood up and slapped former Prime Minister Hideki Tōjō on the head, stunning the court. Moments later, he began rambling incoherently, quoting religious texts, and laughing uncontrollably. Doctors soon declared him mentally unfit to stand trial, and he was sent to a psychiatric hospital instead of continuing with the other defendants. However, some historians and contemporaries have theorized that Ōkawa may have faked or exaggerated his mental breakdown to avoid trial and a potential death sentence. After his release in 1948, his condition appeared to improve quickly, which fueled further speculation that the outburst was deliberate. The Tokyo Trials, officially the International Military Tribunal for the Far East, were held from 1946 to 1948 to prosecute 28 of Japan’s top w*rtime leaders for war crimes, crimes against peace, and crimes against humanity. Eleven judges from Allied nations oversaw the proceedings, which lasted more than two years and produced tens of thousands of pages of testimony. The trials ended with seven ex*cutions, including that of Hideki Tōjō, and marked Japan’s formal reckoning for its role in World War II. #History #fyp #historytok #oldfootage #japan
