@therapistinrecovery: OCD is a problem solver by nature which is great when there’s actually a problem. Most of the time though, there isn’t a problem, so OCD makes one by attaching meaning and directives to very normal internal experiences. The solution is detachment and acceptance of all of our thoughts, feelings, and physical sensations. Like and follow for tips on detachment, acceptance, and normalizing all thoughts and feelings as part of the human experience ❤️ #ocdawareness #obsessivecompulsivedisorder #ocdtok #acceptance #acceptanceandcommitmenttherapy

This doesn't really match with my personal experience of OCD. I have terrifying intrusive thoughts that play out like a hyper realistic movie happening in real time. I don't have a lot of thoughts about those images, just feelings of terror. Most of my ERP therapy has been centered around tolerating the uncertainty that those bad things could happen.

I thought on a clinical level ocd people have an over active amygdala(fear response), and under active profrontal cortex (that filters thoughts) and a malfunctioning basal ganglia (part of the brain that forms habits) so our brains our wired differently and more thoughts become conscience in us than non ocd sufferers?

My guess is a lot of this comes fr an upbringing of Hypervigilance or abuse.

I did the exposure , sat with the discomfort but my mind still keeps the obsession alive and I still get triggered?

I literally convinced myself I was a lesbian and just repressed it for a year. I was in fact not a lesbian at all 😭 (not that that’s bad to be lol)

I feel like you’re leaving out the physiological nuance to the “thoughts” which is an over active amygdala. That’s not rly a “meanings” issue

I love ACT for this. Defusion yess. Noticing our thoughts versus problem solving them

Everyone has intrusive thoughts but if you have ocd those thoughts conscious thoughts. They get stuck in your mind like a ping pong ball. A non ocd brain just lets those thoughts go.

I agree with what you say but I have an insight that does contradict what you said about people with OCD don’t have different thoughts from other people who don’t have it. I have had magical thinking since I was in middle school and I still do. Example of magical thinking is: if I don’t reach that telephone pole in the next five seconds my whole family will die. I have talked about it with people who don’t have OCD and they look at me like I’m crazy and tell me they’ve never had those thoughts. Just a thought

this makes so much sense to me! thank you! my eyes are open! it's like I have magical thinking, I think a thought I have means something about myself. like I have an external apparatus controlling me.
