A private jet that made an emergency landing on a roadway in Delta State has been grounded by aviation authorities, with the incident now the subject of multiple investigations over potential regulatory and security breaches. The aircraft, a 1988 Canadair CL-600 Challenger 601-3A, was carrying four crew members and no passengers when it encountered difficulties while attempting to land at Asaba International Airport on the morning of June 10, 2026. According to aviation authorities, the crew aborted its initial landing attempt before the aircraft subsequently touched down on a road in the Ogwashi-Uku area near Asaba. All four crew members safely evacuated the aircraft, and no injuries were reported. The incident took a dramatic turn hours later when the jet reportedly took off from the roadway and flew to Lagos without obtaining the required regulatory clearance. Air Traffic Control was said to have been informed only after the aircraft had already departed, raising concerns about possible violations of Nigeria’s aviation regulations. In response, the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) immediately grounded the aircraft upon its arrival in Lagos, suspended the operator’s Permit for Non-Commercial Flight (PNCF), and placed the crew under regulatory review. The incident has also attracted the attention of national security agencies. Reports indicate that the Office of the National Security Adviser has launched a probe amid concerns over what may have transpired while the aircraft remained on the ground before its unauthorised departure. Aviation experts have described the incident as a serious breach of established procedures, with questions being raised about the circumstances surrounding the landing, the aircraft’s activities on the ground, and the decision to depart without clearance. The NCAA has notified the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) and is working with the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) to determine the full sequence of events.
