Etege Taytu Betul (c. 1851–1918) was one of the most powerful and influential women in Ethiopian history, an empress, strategist, poet, and nationalist leader. She was the wife of Emperor Menelik II and played a decisive role in politics, culture, and warfare, especially during Ethiopia’s resistance against European colonialism. Key points about Etege Taytu: •	Political power: Taytu was not a ceremonial consort. She actively participated in state affairs, advised Menelik II, influenced appointments, and shaped imperial policy. In her later years, she effectively ruled when Menelik’s health declined. •	Anti-colonial stance: She was fiercely opposed to Italian expansion and deeply suspicious of European powers. Her firm position helped Ethiopia avoid diplomatic traps that could have led to colonization. •	Battle of Adwa (1896): Taytu played a critical role in Ethiopia’s victory over Italy by mobilizing forces, securing supplies and water routes, and strongly advocating resistance over compromise. •	Founder of Addis Ababa: She selected the site for Addis Ababa and promoted its development as the imperial capital, including the construction of churches and public institutions. •	Poetry and cultural influence: Taytu composed political poetry and songs that conveyed patriotism, resistance, and moral authority, using oral tradition to inspire unity and national consciousness. •	Legacy: Though controversial among elites for her strong will and dominance, she is remembered as a patriotic, intelligent, and fearless leader who helped preserve Ethiopia’s sovereignty and cultural identity.
