BIPOC Eurydice and Neurodivergent Orpheus mean so much to me actually

in the most polite way possible, why? i don’t mean to say it’s not important, it’s just that the people who wrote hadestown said that there aren’t any roles that have race or ethnicity specifically tied to them. i just want to learn lol, i don’t mean this in a disrespectful way 🙂

genuine question why does it matter? I'm not in anyway saying it doesn't please don't take it like that I'm just curious. I love hadestown I've seen it live twice now and I love the music so much but I've never like caught anything that sticks in my head of her being BIPOC character. again I'm not at all saying like she shouldn't be im just genuinely curious about this interpretation!

Dare I say that Eurydice should almost always be cast as a BIPOC woman, and that if your hardestown cast isn’t at least 75% POC, and does not have at least 5 black cast members, you shouldn’t be doing it… (high schools that are all white cough cough, Hermes with blaccents cough cough)

i could say the same about orpheus tho his casting as ethnic groups that have been systematically and historically oppressed (scottish, irish, mexican etc) as a poor boy opposing capitalist, industrialist hades

isn’t the whole point of this show is literally anyone can be apart of it? like especially hermes can be played by anyone as long as they have the range for it. i don’t think we should start putting limits on who should be allowed to play what but especially not for this show

I’ve always felt as if Persephone and Hermes use a lot of AAVE in the original cast, and when a white person plays them without making some adjustments it feels..weird?? Idk this is coming from a white person so I could be totally wrong lol!

as a bipoc woman who played eurydice in the teen edition i cannot say how valued and loved i feel when a character is almost always played by women of color.

Orpheus stands up to capitalistic exploitive corporations. Eurydice gets taken advantage of within the system constructed to trap her in it. As an indigenous woman, I love both roles very dearly.

hermes needs to be played by a black actor/actress full stop. eurydice and persephone need to be played by a BIPOC actresses. Orpheus needs to be an oppressed ethnicity (BIPOC, or like Irish, and others). And Hades honestly doesn't really matter, I like white Hades the most because it represents the oppression but I've seen BIPOC Hades and they still carry the metaphor for Hades

the only time eurydice should be white is if they are trying to establish that she is hades foil not orpheus. orpheus would have to be bipoc and i think that bother hades and eurydice would have to be disabled.
