We need more studies on why kids are becoming less literate. My penny in this is that kids are learning through sitewords, and with using technology they can just use spellcheck instead of sounding it out

My mom is an English teacher and whenever I help her grade essays or assignments that are written not typed she always tells me if I can’t read it or there’s no name on it don’t grade it. Then she leave them up on the board sometimes for WEEKS mind you and kids still don’t go pick up their missing assignments and then it goes into the grade book as an F and then and ONLY THEN do they start asking my mom why they got a failing grade on something that was submitted weeks ago. I feel bad for my mom sometimes.

replacing phonetics with “sight words” secured the death of anyone who didn’t read outside of school

A hundred years ago, 60% of youths listed reading as a hobby. Today, it’s less than 15%. On top of not being competently literate, they have no idea how to internalise long form concepts 🥲

I once had a parent ask why I don’t read one on one with her kid for “like 20 mins a day”. Mind you I have 27 students. Also WHAT😭

reading isn’t something that see their parents doing, it isn’t promoted as a fun thing, they don’t see it as useful, their parents don’t read to them, they were handed ipads from 1 year old

It doesn’t help that class sizes are getting bigger. A lot of elementary school students need extra support and resources but can’t get them because the staff isn’t there.

as a kinder teacher, it’s literally their families. they DO NOT care. i have one that refuses to participate in anything we do throughout the entire day, but her mom doesn’t care 🤷🏼♀️makes it out like it’s MY fault for not “engaging her daughter properly”. i can’t force a kid to learn to read

You would be amazed at the amount of students at the Elementary level, who say they never read at home and don’t own any books.
