@pedsdoctalk: Stitch with: @getbabytosleep   Does your baby touching their ears send you into panic and rushing to your pediatrician’s office? You’re not alone-I see soooo many parents worried about this! But often, ear tugging is nothing to be concerned about at all.   👶 Here’s why babies might pull at their ears: ✔️ Exploring & Curiosity – Babies are natural explorers, and their ears are just another exciting discovery! They also love grabbing their feet, poking their belly buttons, or even trying to fit their whole hand in their mouth. It’s all part of learning about their bodies! ✔️ Self-Soothing – Just like some babies suck their thumbs, rub a lovey, or twirl their hair, others find comfort in tugging their ears-especially when they’re tired or overstimulated. It can be their way of winding down. ✔️ Teething – Thanks to nerve connections in the face, teething pain can radiate to the ears, making babies instinctively pull at them. Some babies drool and chew everything in sight, while others get extra fussy. Every baby responds to teething differently, and over time, you’ll learn how yours reacts! ✔️ Other Possible Reasons – Some babies touch their ears when they’re adjusting to new sounds, have dry skin or irritation behind the ears, or even when they’re just playing around.   Over time, you’ll start to recognize what’s normal for your baby. If they’ve always pulled at their ears when tired or teething, it’s likely nothing to worry about. But if ear pulling is new and associated with fussiness or the symptoms mentioned in this reel, consider seeing a clinician to rule out an ear infection.   If you want more info on ear infections including more subtle symptoms and when treatment is needed (yes, antibiotics aren't ALWAYS necessary!) head to my YouTube channel (linktree in bio) to watch the video " Ear Infections in Kids: Symptoms, Treatment, and When Antibiotics Are Needed".   Every baby is different, and learning their patterns will help you feel more confident in knowing what’s normal and when to seek care.   Have you ever noticed your baby tugging their ears? What did it end up being-teething, soothing, or just exploring? Let me know in the comments! ⬇️   🔄 Tag a parent who needs this info & follow @pedsdoctalk for more baby tips!

I played with my son’s ears when he was nursing, just out of habit. His soothing/ tiredness sign thing is still playing with his ears, and he’s 4. It warms my heart ❤

Mine were prone to being extra clumsy, as if their balance was affected. Neither me nor my daughter almost never got a fever.

Just took my son to the GP t9day because of this. He only does it on the right side. His ear is completely fine. I think its a soothing mechanism.

My almost 3 year hold usually sticks his figures in his ears while eating! With food remnants still on his figured! So there are probably little dried up pieces of food in his ear!

My baby did this at 14 months, she still wasn't walking by herself. She had fluid inside her eardrums, when it was removed she stopped the ear pulling and started walking a few days later.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen ear-pulling send parents into full panic mode (and rushing to my office)—when most of the time, it’s totally normal. The tricky part is knowing when it’s not. That’s why I made a full YouTube video walking through what real ear infections look like, how to tell the difference, and when antibiotics actually help. If you watched it be sure to let me know what you think!
