I used to work with Singaporeans a lot, I would ask them if they can do something, and I would hear “Ken” as a response. I was like my name is Jason, not Ken. I learned quickly what they were saying was “can” in stead of “yeah, sure I can do it”. Maybe a direct translation of 可以

We are def not racist 🥲 but its more like our Singlish (Singaporean English) is not widely understood by foreigners and we like to be FAST, because we have 6.11 mil population in this island.

Just want to share my thoughts on this: Singlish is actually English with a mix of Chinese, Malay and dialect slangs. And sometimes some of these cashiers/service crew who are the older generation might be the ones who didn’t take English as their first language when they were younger. But a racist nation- we are definitely not! My work actually involves interacting with a lot of foreigners and they never had a problem understanding me 😆. Hope u have fun here!

See, paywave came from visa. When visa introduced contactless payment in singapore (from what i know visa was one of the first besides NETS Flashpay), they called it visa paywave. And then when every other card did the same thing, 'paywave' just became an umbrella term for any contactless payment. So when they ask "paywave?", it usually just means "are you using contactless payment?"

Singaporeans are generally impatient because we are trained from young to be highly efficient. Being a small country with no natural resources, we need to be efficient in everything that we do. We expected things to work efficiently, it’s all very transactional.

Ok before we go into the singlish English debacle, most of us can code switch pretty seamlessly. However, I must say that some for these shops people, they may not speak English as their first language and may also learned English later in life. They could have come from somewhere (non English speaking) and brought with them their accent and then you combine that with singlish and some other dialects = confusion and lack of clarity in what they try to ask/say.

Actually, many cashiers (esp in food stalls) / store attendants aren’t even Singaporean and may have their own accent when speaking English (or English may not be their first language). It sometimes takes me a while to understand them too.

Jamaicans are also speaking English and you have to be around it for awhile before you can really understand. Different dialects can be pretty hard to understand

It wasn’t racism. On the contrary, Singaporeans are just treating everyone to be at the same level whether you are a local or Caucasian, they will not code switch to perfect English/Amercian accent just because you are white.
