I had a friend who came to the USA in 7th-8th grade. He would help me in math since I sucked! And I would help him practice English. Now he’s an engineer ☺

I’m a 3rd grade ELL teacher and I strongly believe ELL students end up getting a better education than native students, simply because phonics is taught and that attention to detail from the ELL specialist. It’s insane.

Kinder teacher- I have a bilingual student. She translates for me when I have to speak to her mom. She is out performing her peers both, academically and behaviorally. I’ve never been more impressed with a student.

My first year learning English I was in the 8th grade. No ELA, nothing. Just me and my dictionary. I graduated top of my class and fluent by the end of the year.

Yep. I teach English as a second language. And we focus on phonetics and phonics. A lot of the adults learn the ipa alphabet. They know more about grammar than native English speakers.
