Oil Turned to Sludge! What’s Killing the Ford Transit 2.2 TDCi Engine. • Today we’re working on a Ford Transit with a 2.2 TDCi diesel engine. The van came in for a regular service — oil and filter replacement, plus a quick inspection of the suspension. But during the oil change, something immediately caught my attention: the oil filter was completely collapsed, as if the engine had sucked it in from the inside. • This happens when the lubrication system is clogged or when the oil becomes too thick for the pump to handle. According to the owner, the oil was changed only 10 000 km ago, but when we cut open the filter, it was completely full of carbon sludge and thick deposits — a clear sign of an internal engine problem. • The first step was to remove the oil pan and check the oil pickup tube — it’s crucial to make sure it’s not clogged, otherwise the engine will lose oil pressure. In our case, the pickup was only slightly dirty, but not blocked. • The real issue turned out to be the injectors. On this engine, the injectors sit under the valve cover with small copper sealing washers. When these seals burn through, exhaust gases start leaking directly into the crankcase, mixing with the oil. Over time, the oil gets contaminated, thickens, clogs the filter, and the pressure drops.
