The Five Chivalrous Men in the Kabuki Play “Suiko-den” by Utagawa Kunisada I (Toyokuni III) was made in 1863. The print presents the outlaw world of Shiranami Suiko-den, a kabuki drama drawing on the tradition of Water Margin tales, in which bandits and rebels become heroes through courage, loyalty, and defiance of authority. “Shiranami,” literally “white waves,” was a theatrical term for thieves, while “chivalrous” suggests figures whose criminal lives could coexist with a personal code of honour. The five actors appear in a carefully arranged theatrical tableau, their distinctive costumes and confrontational poses introducing larger-than-life personalities rather than explaining a single incident. The appeal lies in this tension between danger and glamour, inviting audiences to admire characters who live outside respectable society. 歌川国貞（一世、三代豊国）による『白浪水滸伝の五人の侠客』は、1863年に制作されました。本作は、盗賊や反逆者が勇気、仲間への忠義、権力への抵抗によって英雄となる『水滸伝』の物語の系譜をくむ歌舞伎『白浪水滸伝』の世界を描いています。「白浪」は文字どおりには白い波を意味しますが、歌舞伎では盗賊を指す言葉でもあり、「侠客」は法に背きながらも独自の義理や人情を重んじる人物を表します。五人の役者は趣向を凝らした衣装と対立を感じさせるポーズで配され、特定の事件の経緯を説明するというより、それぞれの強烈な個性を印象づけています。危険さと華やかさが同居するこの群像は、世間の秩序から外れて生きる人物たちに観客が魅了された、江戸の芝居文化を伝えています。
