Most people don’t realize this wooden tram has been running since 1913 and still uses much of its original route. It was built to move oranges from the Sóller valley to the port when the mountains made road travel nearly impossible. The valley was so isolated that residents emigrated to France, then funded local infrastructure when they returned. That’s why many buildings here show French architectural influence rather than typical Spanish styles. The tram runs on a narrow gauge designed specifically for sharp medieval streets like this one. Electric power replaced mules unusually early for a town this small. Tourism came later, this system existed long before visitors did. What looks decorative today was once critical economic survival infrastructure….❤️
