I just rewatched knives out, and honestly I wouldn't be able to tell in my life that this is 2019 movie if I didn't know it, it was so beautifully filmed, I wish more movies were like that

There's a big lack of extras too. Anywhere in a public setting almost looks like they're the only ones in the city or wherever.

I also hate how movies are so interior designed too. All Netflix movies and a lot of shows homes are so put together and staged. It doesn’t feel real at all. Feels like they’re filming in a model home.

also everything is so CLEAN. like even in fantasy or movies set three hundred years ago.... why is everyone spotless?? the reason I love pirates of the Caribbean, aside from the script, actors, music etc... it's DIRTY. I FEEL like I am gross with them, and it pulls me into the world they are portraying

This is a problem where studio execs are not trusting cinematographers. They ask for no filters, no extreme or experimental lighting, and framing that allows editors to crop and reframe. Then, in the edit, they give the editors no control and none of the "creative" parts are added. We get the most nondescript, non creative, and bland, 'clinical' image. Just let cinematographers use some filters and neat lighting.

100% agree. 90s 2000s camera style was PEAK cinema. I first noticed this in thrillers and horrors, I DONT NEED TO BE ABLE TO SEE HOW RED THAT TOMATO SAUCE IS, make me darker, grainier, i need to NOT know whats going on 😭

The high definition isn’t NECESSARILY a problem, it’s just this weird combination of high definition, awful lighting, terrible cinematography, and bad color grading that make modern movies look like a commercial

the cameras on movies like, godfather remastered, fight club, trainspotting, wolf of wall street, the matrix, scarface etc. like their camera is so good. i liked 90s or 2000s cameras more. it looked more rich and better.
