Sometimes it’s risky to tell people you have a phobia. when I tell people I have Misophonia they will actually go out of their way to do something that triggers me just to see my reaction🥺 it’s fight or flight for me. So glad I work from home!

I have both a phobia of bees and an allergy to bee stings. I was the admin assistant for the head of our office. They decided to throw a picnic style luncheon for our biggest client on the front lawn. I arranged everything, set it all up and made sure everything thing was perfect. My boss told me I was welcome to join them but should not feel obligated. Then our client shows up with her whole executive staff and the barbecue is going and one of her staff saw me heading inside and was like “where are you going? Join us!” I was like thank you but I have issues with bees. He kept pushing. Our client (his boss) was a 70 year old woman who ruled with an iron fist and terrified everyone. She walks up and says “ Why are you trying to get her killed either by allergy or fright? Do you know how hard it is to get a secretary that has both brains and guts?!! Leave her alone. In fact, get her a plate and bring her food to her at her desk before you eat!” 😂

this is a great example of people navigating themselves well. we don't know what trauma this person might have had that has made them now feel this way, hence the notice to HR.

I wish more companies would hire external HR teams so that you're more of a neutral party than some directly hired by the company. many HR people I've had to deal with are very company central and don't care as much about the employees as they should

I had a horrendous birth with my daughter and nearly died. I had this afterwards. When I saw pregnant women in public I felt so fearful for them I felt physically ill. It sounds irrational but you don’t know the experiences people have had that have lead up to that phobia

I have a phobia of butterflies. I don’t usually have to tell people. But everyone found out at a wedding when they be released a bunch of butterflies. I was traumatized - I managed to not scream, but I did run away and have a complete meltdown in my car.

I have globophobia, or fear of balloons. It's legit and I will have panic attacks if they're put up at work. My manager is fully aware and careful to leave any sale displays for days I'm not present.

That had to be such a hard phobia to manage. My heart truly goes out to them. I can't even imagine. My cousin has extreme arachnophobia and I never truly understood until she literally couldn't go into a restaurant due to their Halloween decorations.

I am not trying to sound insensitive at all, but realistically, how would this be managed in the workplace? Obviously they can’t restrict employees from getting pregnant or fire them for doing so. Even moving the pregnant person I think could be seen potentially as a discriminatory action against them. Is there some obvious logical solution that I am not seeing?

There are no accommodations that can be made for this. people are not going to stop having children around you. this is beyond irrational. working from home may be the best option for this person.

I don’t understand this. You can just fear another pregnant person? The phobia pertains to her fear of becoming pregnant. Why would it be a problem to be around a pregnant person, it’s not catching….honest question

I have tokophobia. It's almost never talked about. mine is not triggered by seeing pregnant people, but it makes sense why it would bother other people with this phobia.
