This is GOOD information! Thank you! I once paid a $1500 retainer & received a billing statement after the case was finished for $1632 with no credit for my retainer shown. It couldn’t be explained to me but the bill disappeared & I never heard from that attorney again.

As an attorney, I’ve never heard this lawyer/attorney distinction. I always distinguished between a JD (degree) and lawyer/attorney (lincense). Whatever the language, glad you’re out here educating people on fee structures and licensing requirements!

For my divorce and custody my attorneys fees was 3k my ex made it miserable and go longer than it should by not responding, took almost two years and 10k later. I am still paying for it. 😭

So the retainer is like prepaying for your case? If I, as the client, disagree with the charges against my trust account by the attorney/lawyer, who do I go to file a dispute?

in the Midwest here, the barter system is in effect. My friends have been paid in cows, goats, firearms. horses, you name it. Whatever they can to get their criminal case paid for.

Had an attorney blow through my retainer by charging me for every mistake THEY made. Misspelled word on a document they typed up? I got charged $75. I had a signed contract that stated for $1800 they would get me into court without issues. I had to pay for everything because the retainer ran out. When I asked for a detailed itemized list of everything, they wouldn’t provide it. I terminated the contract and they tried to sue me for it. I presented their bills and the contract and won that case.
