@jonjon.jpeg: Edge conditions mark where neighborhoods begin and end. One of the best examples is the neighborhood commercial corridor—those small stretches of shops that formed before the car, when it made sense to live near the places you visited daily. These edges do more than provide convenience; their continuous buildings create a quiet, defined interior for the neighborhood while keeping daily life active along the edge. #urbanism #urbandesign #portlandoregon #cityplanning
The neighborhoods in northern Chicago like Andersonville are like this. you don't need a car if you live there.

It’s so nice to be able to walk from your house to your local brunch spot and then do some shopping while you meander home.

I live in a part of town that is just homes. No amenities within walking distance. It’s really unfortunate - oh and it’s all single family homes!

I just went to get pizza on Hawthorne and then walked back through the neighborhood to the preschool I teach at and it’s my favorite way to get around. Portland has so many of these amazing little neighborhoods with so much local commerce and accessibility to local businesses. I do wish they would support the super deep SE side of town with more local businesses next to neighborhoods but everything east of 82nd gets forgotten about 🥲

The thing is, this isn't "organic" (or whatever that means), it's a land use pattern based on a transportation system we no longer have: street cars. All the desirable, enjoyable, quiet streets 2 blocks from a coffee shop were served by street cars. Transportation and development go hand in hand and the default, no- one-ever-thinks-to-question-it pattern is 35 mph arterials more than half a mile from each other because people drive. We're not building anything like these neighborhoods from the ground up anywhere that I'm aware of. (please correct me!)

The empty lot behind me was just turned in to a gigantic 10 pump gas station. It also contains a convenience store with no fresh foods, just junk food

Yes! Same in Chicago- having businesses consolidated along Broadway and Halstead help do the same for their neighborhoods. Ready for Denver to update Colfax for this reason!
