Hate to play devil’s advocate, but how else are we supposed to build desperately needed infrastructure without bulldozing some things? You’re offered fair market value plus any additional incovenience costs. Yeah, it sucks, but cities grow and change and develop and we need to improve our transit BADLY.

Expropriation aka theft. Metrolinx execs should all be in jail after the the eglinton line mismanagement

It does really suck for the affected houses but… new rapid transit is good for the entire city 🤷

These are realtors - remember they are not concerned about house owners and general public. This a cheap trick to make a buck.

If your house was going to be expropriated, would that not be required disclosure in a transaction?

I often wonder if you’re not affected by expropriation directly , but instead what if the constant drilling does damage to your home in time - cracks etc ? How does a home owner hold city responsible for that ?

...this comes off, putting it mildly, like incredibly tone deaf and willfully myopic. So you're slinging hundreds of thousands of not millions around, and acting like it's soOoOoOo unfair that anyone else has to travel to make a living? Y'all want all the benefits and conveniences of living in a city with none of the pro-social trade offs now because your tax bracket, (or more likely your Daddy's) secures you a mortgage? the people bellyaching about this can go buy a McMansion in a nothing town slowly being swallowed by golf courses and Amazon warehouses and watch your property value increase somewhere in the middle of nowhere. Canadians have no effing clue what expropriation really means and how "unfair" it can be. These are champagne problems.

I’m sorry but y’all are dancing a fine line that is mostly incorrect. The city doesn’t build subways. And they certainly don’t own the ground below your property. Perhaps the crown does, but even then, they need to legally expropriate it.

Metrolinx is essentially using the government as a weapon to expropriate people from their homes, so they can then reap the profits once the line is built. Homeowners need to be compensated with an equitable share of the company so they can profit too, to make this fair.

People compare it with China, but you do know they move those people to make subway lines. Canada is more people-centric or democratic, and that comes with a price: people get good prices for their houses and get compensation; you have no fear of losing your house. There is always a cost of development, the majority of those houses are occupied by boomers and soon many of them are rented, we need more subway lines, more trains and more connections stretching east and west, which also bring in more wealth as it connects more areas and always expands the concentrated population of Toronto to other regions. Y’all should be supporting this and be thankful for it.
