@jaminanderson: Nationalism freed Africa; it also chained it to new masters. When Ghana won independence in 1957, Kwame Nkrumah promised that “the independence of Ghana is meaningless unless it is linked with the total liberation of Africa.” It was the birth cry of Pan-African nationalism… a vision that built schools, dams, and dreams of unity. But the same nationalism that empowered a continent also silenced its people. Was it liberation or control? Hope or hubris? Maybe both. 🎥 Part 2: 6 books that unpack how nationalism empowered and betrayed post-colonial Africa. #KwameNkrumah #PanAfricanism #AfricanHistory #PostcolonialAfrica #ReadTheSystem

I'd say the bigger issue was the CIA, which had a lot to do with regime change in Ghana

Shocking, nations act on the interests of global hierarchies. How many national revolution do y'all want before you decide to actually do class analysis?

He concentrated power not for himself but because of foreign interference. He wasn't dominating the country, you should dig deeper into Ghanaian history.

Kwame Nkrumah was a pivotal executor of Pan-Africanism, but he built upon the work of its true architects. He was directly inspired by the foundations laid decades earlier: Henry Sylvester-Williams, who didn't just coin the term but organized the first Pan-African Conference, championing the unity and pride of all African peoples. This work directly influenced Marcus Garvey's mass movement for Black pride and W.E.B. Du Bois's intellectual and political organizing. Nkrumah learned from their powerful, established ideas and was the first to implement them as a head of state.
