I didn't realize this was a theory. I honestly thought it was basically spelled out at the end of the book that the government "rescuer" knew they were there.

It's been a minute since I read the book, but I feel like chapter 1 explained why they were spread out and didn't know each other.

the boys are not stranded on the island as part of an experiment. The novel never suggests that anyone deliberately placed them. The boys are British schoolchildren being evacuated during a war.
Their plane is shot down, and it crashes onto a deserted tropical island.
The pilot dies, and no adults survive, leaving the boys completely on their own.

I thought the naval officer was supposed to show irony when he says something like, “I would expect British boys to act more civilized” when he himself is fighting in WWII. Regardless, I’ve never heard this theory. It’s pretty interesting.

it’s been a while since i read it but the way my teachers explained it to me, all the boys were being sent away in the plane because their parents wanted them safe from war

The navy officer did show surprise at how the boys behaved after he asks if there are any bodies and Ralph answers honestly. It says something about him knowing when someone is telling him the truth.

I thought this was common knowledge about this theory? The first time I heard the theory was in the early 2000s.
