The real insight here is that all humans are just very long running chemistry experiments. The more you learn about microbiology and life sciences the more we come off as just giant biological machines. Appealing to mysticism (religious or otherwise) is a coping mechanism with that reality. It raises some hard questions about what it means to be alive.
