an unreal experience 🌋🇯🇵 when we planned this trip to Hokkaido, Japan, one objective that was high on our bucketlist was climbing Mt Yotei, but we knew the chances of getting a weather window were really slim. It dumped snow our entire trip, all except for one day that projected blue skis (also happened to be our last ski day of the trip) and we decided to go for it. We did nearly talk ourselves out of it the morning of 😅. It was so unbelievably cold, a bit windy, and we were SO tired from our trip so far skiing every day for the last week. But we decided we would just start going up and likely turn around before the top whenever we got too tired. Ultimately going up 5,500 feet actually ended up being a lot easier than all of us expected (being at low elevation definitely helped) and before we knew it, we were standing on the summit (I know that sounds ridiculous, but we all ended up feeling really good). We got the chance to ski INTO the crater, which was absolutely unreal, and then added an additional 1,000 feet of uphill (this part nearly killed me, hence no videos) Skiing down 5,500 feet was incredible and absolutely exhausting. The rime ice up high made for really variable conditions up top, and by the time the snow got good, my legs were absolutely fried and tbh I struggled more than I would have liked to. But overall what an amazing day in the mountains, an what a way to wrap up the ski portion of this trip. I’m so grateful the mountain allowed us passage this day & I won’t ever forget it!! This is a technical route that requires extra gear, careful planning, & avalanche knowledge. Please do your research and/or hire a guide!! #japanskiing #japan #backcountryski
