Zimerman won the 9th International Chopin Piano Competition in 1975, at just 18 years old, impressing the jury with his poetic tone, perfect control of sound, and deep understanding of Chopin’s style. During the competition, Artur Rubinstein (then a juror) personally congratulated him and later invited Zimerman to perform in Paris — a moment that changed his life.

9th International Chopin Piano Competition – Warsaw, 1975 • Featured 118 pianists from 30 countries, marking one of the most international editions to date. • The jury was chaired by Kazimierz Sikorski, with distinguished members including Jan Ekier, Halina Czerny-Stefańska, and Artur Rubinstein. • Zimerman’s performance of Chopin’s Concerto in E minor and Mazurkas Op. 24 earned him the First Prize and admiration from the entire jury.
